As a Spiritual Companion…

I am a spouse, mother, grandmother, retired Anglican clergy, friend and neighbour with a BA in Psychology, an M.Div. and a Certificate in Spiritual Formation and Spiritual Companioning from the Pacific Jubilee Program (2002-2004). I enjoy a deep connection with Nature:  I grew up to the rhythm of the ocean and the seasons, the changing light; I am passionate about gardening, walks in the forest, delighting in bird visitors to my yard and awed by tiny things that survive and thrive in the most difficult of places and situations. For a time I was a farmer - raising sheep, hens and asparagus and harvesting maple syrup - never feeling more alive than when I am outdoors. I greatly value the practice of journaling and personal and community rituals and times of silence and retreat.

My biggest challenge has been learning to Be, rather than Do,  learning to be “free to be” - not restricted by routines and disciplines but rather spontaneous in my God relationship, as with a best friend who constantly surprises me. The sacredness of the search for personal identity inspires me and moves me to offer to walk with others in their unique and sacred search. This walking together on holy ground - spiritual companioning - is an incredible privilege and honour, and one that I take most seriously.

I believe deeply in the work of change and growth.

“The word change normally refers to new beginnings. But the mystery of transformation more often happens not when something new begins, but when something old falls apart. The pain of something old falling apart—chaos—invites the soul to listen at a deeper level, and sometimes forces the soul to go to a new place. Most of us would never go to new places in any other way. … Change happens, but transformation is always a process     of letting go, living in the confusing, shadowy space for a while. Eventually, we are spit up on a new and unexpected shore.” (Richard Rohr)

This transformation, this living in the confusing shadowy space that is much of Life, can be made easier with the companionship of a spiritual friend. That is what I hope to offer those who allow me the privilege of walking at their side.
