Plants and Elementals
WORKSHOP SERIES: with Rosemary Dzus
6 Sunday Afternoons: April 26, May 24, June 28, August 23, September 27, October 25, 2026
After several years of monthly gatherings and focusing on communicating with plants, in 2025 I sensed that the range of beings open to communication was a far greater field than that with which I had begun, which was simply the world of plants. In response to this, 2025 became the year in which I expanded the scope of communication to include the elementals, starting with water, earth, and fire.
I explored the material, bodily connection humans have with these three elementals, and found deep bonds that are not typically acknowledged in our day to day lives. Many of us no longer regularly connect with the Earth, Water, or Fire. Exploring our connections with these elementals strengthens our ties to the earth, and all its beings, and the work becomes deeper, richer, more nuanced, and more mysterious rather than less.
For example, for Fire, I needed to look deeply in to the history of human relationship with fire, and how pivotal the control of fire was to our evolution. I imagined how challenging life was for early humans without controlled fire – no light at night to keep predators away from the sleeping place, nor warmth except from other bodies, no method by which to cook meat, roots, or vegetables, which, without cooking, required long hours of chewing. It is likely that the controlled use of fire had a great influence on our evolutionary path.
There is also a strong connection between human beings and fire, through our body’s metabolic processes. Like a long-burning flame, since birth we have been taking in fuel molecules (food) and oxygen, and rearranging those molecules, changing them, and expelling what is unnecessary. We are, in a very real sense, a reaction zone, like a fire, although in a much more controlled way. We look solid and substantial, but part of who we are is being a reaction zone for chemical and physical processes. Without the processes of metabolism, the fire we have in us goes out.
I will be continuing this exploration in 2026. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join me on this journey.

Rosemary Dzus, a recent graduate of the Prairie Jubilee program, and a student of the Enneagram since 1990, has had a life-long interest and fascination with plants. She has studied plants at both an academic and practical level, through Environmental Studies and herbalism, and has come to the realization that they are not bunches of insentient green matter, but rather have an intelligence and ways to communicate with us.
